  24.         All files necessary for ShowGIF's operation are contained in
  25.         self-extracting SHWGIF55.EXE.  If ShowGIF is not contained in
  26.         the self extractor, it may have been modified or infected with
  27.         a virus.  Any files not contained within SHWGIF55.EXE are not
  28.         necessary for ShowGIF's operation and may be deleted at your
  29.         disgression.

  33.         Many people have contacted me with various problems they have
  34.         experienced with SHOWGIF.  This is the list of things I usually
  35.         tell them to try.  You may be able to save yourself the cost of
  36.         long distance phone call by trying some of these simple suggestions.
  37.  
  38.         - If you used CSHOWGIF's autodetect function, double check to make
  39.           sure that it selected the right card.  If it didn't than change it.
  40.  
  41.         - If your card has a VESA driver, please try installing it
  42.           _BEFORE_ SHOWGIF.  Your OEM's code is probably better
  43.           than mine.
  44.  
  45.         - If your card is not supported by SHOWGIF, try installing
  46.           your VESA driver before SHOWGIF.
  47.  
  48.         - Try a different terminal program (Qmodem is known to work well)
  49.  
  50.         - Try a different protocol/protocol driver (if you use an external
  51.           protocol such as DSZ)
  52.  
  53.         - Try disabling 360x480x256 mode.  This really isn't necessary if
  54.           you have a superVGA board.  You can disable it by using the delete
  55.           mode option in CSHOWGIF.
  56.  
  57.         If you have a high speed modem (v.32, v.32bis, HST, 2400 with
  58.         built in error correction [ARQ/MNP4/v.42]), please check the
  59.         following if you are experiencing CPS loss:
  60.  
  61.         - Make sure hardware handshaking is enabled in your terminal program
  62.           (usually called RTS/CTS or RTS).  RTS during write should be
  63.           OFF in qmodem.  It will NOT slow down your transfers if your
  64.           modem is set up properly
  65.  
  66.         - Only if your terminal doesn't have a high speed modem, enable
  67.           handshaking in SHOWGIF with the /f:x switch (where x is the
  68.           port number your modem is connected)
  69.  
  70.         - Make sure hardware handshaking is enabled in your modem.
  71.           On many it is the "&H1" command.  Consult your modem's
  72.           manual.  If it is disabled, enable it either in your terminal's
  73.           modem setup string or write it into your modem's NRAM with the
  74.           "&W" command.
  75.  
  76.         If all else fails, try configuring ShowGIF to a standard VGA
  77.

  80.         I'd like to make the following request:
  81.  
  82.                 If you find a particular terminal program or a particular
  83.         GIF (especially a particular GIF) that causes ShowGIF to lock up
  84.         consistantly, I'd like to have it in order to resolve any
  85.         incompatibilities.

  89.         Two final notes:
  90.  
  91.         - The autodetect will not properly detect PARADISE cards,
  92.           PARADISE people have to enter the chipset by hand
  93.  
  94.         - ShowGIF doesn't support the Trident 8800BR's 128k page frame.
  95.           This is presant only on the older Trident boards.  If 8800CS
  96.           doesn't work, I'm afraid that your stuck with standard VGA.

  100.         Use of SHOWGIF with HS/link:
  101.  
  102.         If you are experiencing unreliable transfers with HS/link, try
  103.         enabling slow handshaking in either the configuration (last
  104.         line on the first page) or in the command line (-HS).  If you
  105.         have a high speed modem (either 9600 or 2400 MNP) consider
  106.         disabling XON/XOFF (-HX).
  107.  
  108.         For best results in terms of viewing the GIF, disable I/O
  109.         buffering (-NB).  This may have a negative effect on throughput,
  110.         so try it either way to determine which is better for you.
